Stuff is not Salvation
In the short story “Stuff in not Salvation” Anna Quindlen’s purpose was to inform the reader that more and more people are becoming in debt. She clearly states to stop putting stuff on credit that you can’t afford. Being materialistic is bad because most of the people that are in debt are materialistic. This short story reminds me of my materialistic uncle Rick.
My uncle Rick is the type of person who thinks that having material things is fine. He was one of those people that lost his house, cars, furniture, and tools. Why, because he put everything on credit even though he couldn’t afford it. I would always wonder why buy something if you cant afford it. Not my uncle Rick, he would always say “there’s nothing wrong with building credit.” The reason why I know he became materialistic, is because growing up in Mexico, his whole family was poor. Eating meat once a week, not going to school to support his family financially, working from sun up to sun down, he was just tired of not having anything life had to offer. Lets be honest though, is there really a difference between a brand name microwave and a regular microwave? I don’t think so, but Uncle Rick thinks having brand names and shinny new things is always better. Even though it cost him his house, cars, furniture, and his tools, having stuff on credit isn’t good. One day he will realize having brand names and shinny new things isn’t anything.
